About this course
Losing a loved one or someone we cared about, can be a most profound and painful experience. Grief can feel overwhelming, isolating, and at times confusing.
This group is for anyone who has lost someone significant in their life, be it partners, parents, children, friends or pets, and is struggling to navigate the experience of bereavement, whether the loss is recent or from some time ago.
You are warmly invited to join a supportive group where you can share, listen, reflect, or simply sit alongside others who understand something of what it means to grieve.
There is no expectation to explain or justify your feelings, but if being in a gentle, compassionate space to explore your loss feels right for you at this time, that is reason enough to come.
Over the weeks, we will thoughtfully explore the stages of grief described by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross — denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. We'll focus on each stage, and will invite you to use a piece of reflective writing or short poem as a starting point. There will be space to consider how these themes resonate with your own experience, recognising that grief is deeply personal and does not follow a fixed path.
About your tutor
Padmalila is part of the Buddhist community in Bethnal Green. She has been living in Tower Hamlets for about 35 years and in Bethnal Green since they were about 26 so that's about 30 years. They were a nursery school teacher for many years, and have worked in a team running a charity shop on Roman Road. Padmalila studied art for quite a few years and recently retrained as a psychotherapist and has been working as a therapist for three years. They have a particular interest in end-of-life care and trained as a death doula (someone who befriends a person who is dying). Padmalila runs a monthly death cafe (an informal space to share experiences, thoughts and feelings about death and dying). They have been part of various groups over the years including therapeutic groups and value being in community and the perspective, connection and healing that this brings. Some of the things they love most are spending time with their great niece (2 and a half years old) and nephew (6 months old), and dancing.
